Citation Share

Citation share is the percentage of relevant prompts in which an AI engine cites a specific brand or domain inside its generated answer. It is the core measurable outcome of Generative Engine Optimization.

What it is

Citation share quantifies how often an AI engine names a particular brand, links to a particular domain, or extracts a passage from a particular source when answering a defined set of prompts. It is calculated by running a representative prompt set (typically 50–200 prompts) through one or more AI engines and counting the fraction of responses that cite the target. Citation share is measured per engine (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) and aggregated. Tracking it weekly creates a measurable baseline and target — the same way ranking trackers did for traditional SEO.

Why it matters for GEO

Citation share is the GEO equivalent of organic ranking. Without it, you have no way to measure progress, prove ROI, or set service-level guarantees. CiterLabs's +20pt guarantee is denominated in citation-share lift.

The CiterLabs perspective

CiterLabs measures citation share across 4 LLMs daily and uses the baseline to set the +20pt sprint target.
